CDYAP X Leadership Convention (Visayas & Mindanao)
The Centrist Democratic Youth Association of the Philippines (CDYAP) organized the first CDYAP x Leadership Convention last May 16-19, 2014 at Malasag Eco-village and Gardens, Cagayan de Oro City. The convention gathered student leaders from different colleges and universities in
Visayas and Mindanao.
Upon the arrival of the delegates at the venue on May 16, 2014, they participated in a simple get-to-know-you activity with their fellow participants. The delegates were then grouped into five groups namely: Team Human Dignity (Blue), Team Empowerment (Yellow), Team Political Maturity (Orange), Team Social Responsibility (Green) and Team Integrity (Red). The team names represent the core values of CDYAP. The teams presented their cheers and appointed their respective team leaders that led them in their next activity, the teambuilding. The teambuilding activities aim to establish unity and camaraderie among the delegates who have diverse backgrounds. In each obstacle, they were tasked to work cooperatively to finish the task ahead of time from other teams and develop the sense of competence.
A welcome remarks were given by Dr. Peter Koeppinger, Country Representative of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. He talked about awakening the sense of nationalism in the youth and the sense of urgency in taking part of nation building to uplift our country from extreme poverty.
The day ended with the trust walk activity. The activity aimed to develop the trust of each group towards their group mates by passing through each obstacle with the help of their partners.
Lady Michelle “Tweet” Sering started the second day of the convention with her inspirational talk on Youth and the Impact of Writing. The delegates were given the opportunity to enhance their writing skills through the writing workshop. The workshop reminded them of the important role of writing in the world today.
The talk of Mr. Aaron Benedict de Leon, Secretary-General of the Centrist Democratic Party of the Philippines (CDP) on “A Changing World, A Changing Youth” shared to the youth certain problems and issues that our world faces. In the talk, he called for change and challenged the youth against apathy.
To increase the awareness and to rouse the students’ consciousness about our rights, Mr. Arjay Mercado, University Student Council President of UP Diliman shared his story about his struggles as a student and and how these shaped his awareness of students rights and welfare.
The day ended with fun-filled games which brought out the active and dynamic personalities of the participants.
On May 18,2014, the third day of the Convention, participants were tasked to lists all the problems in their respective institutions, community, municipality/city and provinces. During the workshop, they reported these concerns and the corresponding proposed solutions.
Mr. Tony Meloto, founder of Gawad Kalinga (GK) inspired the youth more to take part of the action to transform our country through his talk on “Transformational Leadership “. He motivated the youth to not just plan for our country but to implement these as well.
One aspect of leadership is governance. Hon. Rufus B. Rodriguez, Representative of the 2nd District of Cagayan de Oro City shared his thoughts on “The Youth and Governance” urging young people to be more politically active and to take part in making government accountable to the people.
Participants then took part in breakout sessions about Personal Finance, Event Management and Marketing, the establishment of the Bangsamoro and Experiences during Typhoon Yolanda.
To formally end the convention proper, Ms. Cris Giangan, National Chairman of the Centrist Democratic Youth Association for the Philippines (CDYAP) gave the closing remarks. This was followed with the parting dinner and campfire.
The campfire activity paved the way for our delegates to showcase their talents as they presented song and dance numbers as well as comedy and drama sketches about leadership and the youth as the hope of the nation. This activity concluded the CDYAP x Leadership Convention as CDYAP opened its door to the youth leaders who are willing to work hand-in-hand with CDYAP for our nation building.
On May 19, 2014, the new members of CDYAP had the Basic Orientation Seminar. They also had discussions with their respective region heads regarding the upcoming plans of CDYAP.
Leadership is not something that we should only practice in times of necessity or only for a period of time but it is something that should be practiced and applied always in our daily lives, to guide the nation for a brighter tomorrow. CDYAP x Leadership Convention enhanced the leadership skills of the delegates from diverse backgrounds. This proved that cultural and ethnic differences are not hindrances towards progress.
